What is an AI interviewer, and what does it actually do?
An AI interviewer holds the first conversation with a job applicant so that a recruiter does not have to. What matters is what it asks, what it is allowed to decide, and what a candidate has to do to finish it.

An AI interviewer, in one paragraph
An AI interviewer is software that holds a job interview with a candidate, usually the first round, without a recruiter taking part. It asks the questions, follows up when an answer is too vague to use, and hands the recruiter a summary, a score against the role’s criteria, and the transcript or recording the score was based on. Some AI interviewers work over text chat, some hold a spoken conversation, and some record video. In a well-designed one, a person still decides who moves forward.
The same thing is also called AI interview software, an AI interview platform, a virtual interviewer or an AI pre-screening interview. They all describe the first conversation with an applicant, run by software so that every applicant gets one.
How an AI job interview works, step by step
- The recruiter sets up the role. A job description, the questions that matter at first-round stage, and the criteria a good answer should meet.
- The candidate gets a link. Usually by email, from a job board or in a message. A responsible system tells them before the first question that they will be talking to an AI.
- The interview happens when it suits the candidate. There is no slot to book. The AI asks each question, and when an answer leaves out what the question was for, it asks again in a different way.
- The recruiter gets a profile back. A summary of what the candidate said, how it measures against the criteria, and the full transcript or recording underneath.
- A person decides. The recruiter reads the shortlist, checks the evidence behind any score that matters, and books the real interviews.
Text, voice and video AI interviews
| Format | The candidate needs | The recruiter gets | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text chat | A phone and a few spare minutes | A transcript of typed answers | Volume roles, and facts such as pay and notice period |
| Voice | A quiet place and uninterrupted time | A recording and a transcript | Roles where speaking is the job |
| Video | A camera, somewhere presentable, and mobile data | A video recording, often scored | Roles where presence on camera matters |
The format decides who finishes the interview and what you learn from those who do. The trade-offs are laid out in AI video interviews or chat interviews.
What an AI interviewer is good at
Every applicant gets a first round. When a role draws two hundred applicants, most are normally rejected on a CV without a conversation. Software can talk to all of them.
The questions do not drift. The hundredth candidate is asked the same things as the first, which is what makes their answers comparable.
No scheduling. The back-and-forth of booking phone screens disappears, and candidates can answer at night or between shifts.
It collects the facts that decide a first round. Relevant experience, salary expectations, notice period and availability, asked the same way every time and kept with the transcript. Which questions to ask is covered in the questions a first round actually has to answer.
What it should not be allowed to decide
Who gets rejected. An AI interviewer that issues rejections on its own turns one scoring mistake into hundreds of identical ones that nobody notices. The safer design ranks and flags, and leaves the decision to a person.
Anything the candidate did not say. Scoring confidence, enthusiasm or personality from a face or a tone of voice is the hardest part of this technology to defend. A score should rest on the answers, and you should be able to read them. There is more on this in is an AI screening interview fair to the candidate?
AI interviewer vs a human first round
| AI interviewer | Recruiter phone screen | |
|---|---|---|
| Applicants it can reach | All of them | As many as the recruiter has hours for |
| When it happens | Whenever the candidate is free | When both calendars agree |
| Consistency | The same questions every time | Varies with the hour and the workload |
| Follow-up questions | The good ones ask them on vague answers | Yes, with judgement |
| Selling the role and building rapport | Limited | Far better |
| Unusual profiles | Scores what it was told to look for | Can spot potential a rubric misses |
| Record of what was said | The full transcript or recording | Notes written afterwards |
The two are not really rivals. The AI interviewer holds the first conversation with everyone, and the recruiter spends the hours it saves on the people worth a real one.
AI interviewer vs CV screening and recruitment chatbots
CV screening reads documents. It can rank applicants on what they wrote, but it cannot tell you what they expect to be paid, when they can start, or whether they are still looking.
A recruitment chatbot usually answers applicant questions, books interview slots, or asks a few yes-or-no eligibility questions. It is useful, and if it cannot follow up it is closer to a form than to an interview.
An AI interviewer holds the conversation itself. All three are explained side by side in AI candidate screening explained.
How to tell if you are talking to an AI interviewer
If you are the candidate, you should not have to guess. A responsible AI interviewer says so before the first question and asks you to agree. If it has not, ask directly. Replies that arrive instantly at any hour, and questions that keep to a fixed structure however the conversation goes, are the other signs.
Being interviewed by software does not have to mean software decides. Ask the employer whether a person reviews the results. In a system built properly, one does. What to have ready beforehand is in how to prepare for an AI interview.
Questions people ask
Can an AI interviewer replace a recruiter?
No. It replaces the most repetitive part of the job, the same first-round conversation held with every applicant. Deciding who to hire, selling the role, negotiating an offer and judging an unusual candidate still need a person.
Can candidates use ChatGPT during an AI interview?
In a text interview a candidate can draft answers with another AI tool, and the transcript shows what was sent rather than who wrote it. Questions about the candidate’s own specific experience, with follow-ups on the details, are far harder to outsource than general ones. Voice and video make it harder, not impossible.
How long does an AI interview take?
As long as its questions. A first round that sticks to the handful of questions that decide whether to book an interview is short, and short is what candidates finish.
Which AI interviewers are available in Malaysia?
Several, in text, voice and video formats and at very different prices. We compare eight, including our own, in the 8 best AI interviewer tools in Malaysia.
Where we stand
We make Agentic Blue, an AI interviewer that is typed by default with Voice and Video as options, so read the above knowing that. Blue tells candidates it is an AI before the first question, asks about experience, salary expectations, notice period and availability, follows up on vague answers, and gives the recruiter a scored profile with the full transcript. It does not reject anyone.
