What counts as an AI interviewer

An AI interviewer asks a candidate questions without a recruiter present, then hands the recruiter something to review: a score, a summary, a transcript or a recording. That rules out software that only parses CVs or posts jobs, however much AI it uses. It also rules out mock-interview apps built for job seekers, which fill a surprising share of the search results for this topic. How an AI job interview works, step by step, is in what is an AI interviewer, and what does it actually do?

The tools below use three formats, and the format matters more than the brand:

  • Text. The candidate types answers in a chat. It works on any phone and leaves a transcript, and it tells you nothing about how the candidate speaks.
  • Video. The candidate records answers on camera, sometimes to an animated avatar. You see and hear them, and they need a camera, a quiet room and the data to upload it.
  • Voice. A spoken conversation with the AI, closer to a phone screen.

If you have not decided which your roles need, video interviews or chat interviews goes through the trade-offs.

Languages and pricing are as each vendor publishes them. “On request” means no price was on the website.

1. Agentic Blue

Blue runs the first-round interview in a typed chat by default, or by Voice or Video where the employer sets it. A recruiter describes the role in a sentence or uploads a job description, the JD Builder Agent writes the posting and the screening questions, and each candidate gets a link. There is no account to create and no app to install, and a candidate who closes the tab can reopen the link and carry on. How it works for employers here, including languages and where data is stored, is on the AI interviewer for Malaysia page, and the whole first round it runs, from job posting to ranked shortlist, is on the AI recruiter page.

Blue asks about experience, salary expectations, notice period and availability, and follows up when an answer is too vague to use. Candidates are told they are talking to an AI before the first question and have to agree. When the interview ends, AI Ranking scores it against the criteria the recruiter set and puts the shortlist in order. Every score carries its reasoning and the full transcript, and Blue does not reject anyone. The recruiter decides who moves forward.

A design choice worth knowing: Blue is never shown the role’s must-haves while it is interviewing. They are used afterwards, to rank and to flag. An interviewer that knows the must-haves during the conversation tends to keep asking a candidate who does not meet them the same thing in different words until they give up.

Pricing: the first 3 typed interviews each month are free. After that you pay for each action rather than a seat or a bundle: Agentic Blue publishes its prices in ringgit and charges for what you run: RM 3.10 a typed interview, RM 0.55 a minute for voice or video (about RM 5.50 for a 10-minute one), and the first 3 typed interviews each month free. Top up from RM 50.00; there is no seat fee and no subscription.

Where it falls short: it is text only, so for a role where speaking is the job you will not hear the candidate until a later round. It publishes no ATS integrations. And a typed answer shows what was said, not who wrote it, so questions about the candidate’s own specific experience matter more than general ones.

It is screening software rather than an applicant tracking system; the difference, and what it screens for, is set out in how candidate screening software differs from an ATS.

2. KitaHQ

KitaHQ runs AI video interviews that candidates complete in a web browser, on their own time, without downloading an app. Around the interview it offers resume screening against role criteria, behavioural and communication assessments, and automated invitations and reminders. Recruiters get a report with scores, a transcript and the recording.

It lists more than ten interview languages and says it handles answers that mix them, which matters in Malaysia, where a candidate may start a sentence in English and finish it in Malay. It has offices in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Jakarta.

Pricing: not published. KitaHQ says its cost per interview falls at higher volumes.

Worth knowing: video gives you a candidate’s spoken answers and asks more of them in return: a camera, somewhere quiet, and the mobile data to upload.

3. ourteam

ourteam runs structured AI interviews with adaptive follow-up questions and competency-based scoring, and bundles CV screening, assessments, a built-in applicant tracking system and a shared dashboard for the hiring team. Its FAQ describes the interview as a conversation of 15 to 20 minutes that candidates take whenever suits them.

It lists more than five interview languages, naming Malay, Bahasa Indonesia and Vietnamese, and serves Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia and the United States.

Pricing: not published. The route in is a demo.

Worth knowing: its public pages did not make clear whether candidates speak, record video or type. Ask, because the format decides who finishes the interview.

4. NAX Ai Interviewer

NAX is a Kuala Lumpur company that builds websites, software and AI agents, and NAX Ai Interviewer is its voice-first screening product. A candidate opens a single-use link, passes a camera, microphone and network check, and speaks with the AI, which follows up on vague answers and allows 30 seconds of thinking time per question. The camera runs for the whole session, which is recorded in one take and lasts 15 to 30 minutes depending on the role, NAX says.

It lists more than 125 languages and accents, including a mix of Malay and English, and logs tab switches, copy-paste, extra screens and multiple faces as integrity checks. The employer gets a Pass, Review or Fail verdict with the transcript, the recording and the integrity log. NAX says it never sends a rejection on its own, and that the conversation about salary stays with your team.

Pricing: a one-time setup fee plus a monthly plan based on candidate volume and the number of active languages. The structured data on its pages lists plans from RM150 a month.

Worth knowing: it asks a lot of candidates, a camera and a quiet, well-lit place, and in exchange you hear them speak and get a proctored session. We set it against Blue point by point in Agentic Blue vs NAX Ai Interviewer.

5. Interviewer.AI

Interviewer.AI is based in Singapore and built around one-way video interviews: candidates record their answers, and the platform scores how relevant they are and summarises them. The higher plan adds conversational interviews led by an AI avatar that asks follow-up questions, along with fraud checks. It also screens resumes and lists more than ten languages.

Pricing: published in US dollars. Essential is USD 199 a month for 50 interview credits and Professional is USD 399 a month for 120, each with a 14-day free trial. Enterprise, which adds ATS integrations, is quoted.

Worth knowing: the avatar interviews and AI summaries are on Professional, not Essential, so compare plans against the feature you actually want.

6. Manatal

Manatal is an applicant tracking system that appears on most Malaysian and Singaporean recruitment software lists. Its AI Interviewer is an add-on that runs automated video screening around the clock and feeds the results into the same pipeline as the rest of your hiring.

Pricing: the ATS starts at USD 15 per user a month on the Professional plan billed yearly, or USD 19 billed monthly.

Worth knowing: the interview languages it lists are English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Dutch, Bahasa Indonesia, Russian and Polish. Malay is not among them, so test it with your own candidates first. The AI Interviewer is an add-on available on request and runs on credits. It makes most sense if you need the ATS anyway.

7. HireVue

HireVue is one of the oldest names in video interviewing, and it is built for large employers. It offers one-way and live video interviews, a voice-based AI interviewer, a chat agent for candidates, and job-relevant and game-based assessments. It names French, English, Spanish and Portuguese among its interview languages, “and more”. It says it integrates with more than 45 applicant tracking systems and holds SOC 2 and ISO certifications.

Pricing: not published. Buying is through sales.

Worth knowing: it is sized for enterprise procurement. A company hiring a few roles a month will find most of the platform aimed at a problem it does not have.

8. Eightfold AI Interviewer

Eightfold is a talent intelligence platform, and its AI Interviewer is one part of it. Interviews are conversational video with adaptive questions, and a single session can cover functional, soft-skill and coding questions. It lists more than 24 languages, checks for signs of cheating including identity verification, and holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 certification.

Pricing: not published.

Worth knowing: Eightfold describes the product as built for organisations with 1,000 to 5,000 employees. Below that size it is unlikely to be the practical choice.

How to choose between them

Pick the format from the job, not the vendor. If speaking is the work, as on a sales floor, a front desk or a phone line, a spoken format tells you something text cannot. If the role draws hundreds of applicants on their phones, the format the most people finish is the one that screens the most people.

Ask what you get back. A score with no evidence under it cannot be checked. Look for the transcript or recording beside every score.

Ask whether it rejects anyone on its own. “Automatically shortlists” and “automatically rejects” are often the same feature described from different ends.

Test the languages with real answers. A language on a list is not the same as handling a candidate who answers in English and finishes in Malay.

Work out the cost per completed screening. Divide the price by the number of interviews it buys. Per-seat pricing makes a volume problem expensive in exactly the way you are trying to escape.

Ask the data questions before the demo ends. Candidate answers are personal data under Malaysia’s PDPA. The questions worth asking are in our buying guide to AI recruitment software in Malaysia.

Questions people ask

Which companies offer AI interviews in Malaysia?

Of the tools Malaysian employers can use today, Agentic Blue interviews in a typed chat by default, with Voice and Video as options, and NAX runs a spoken interview on camera. KitaHQ, Interviewer.AI, Manatal’s add-on, HireVue and Eightfold use video or voice. ourteam runs structured AI interviews in several Southeast Asian languages. NAX is a Kuala Lumpur company, and KitaHQ has an office there. Hiredly’s chat interviewer, Ashley, was retired at the end of 2025.

What is the best AI interviewer?

There is no single best one, because the formats measure different things. For a first round at volume whose job is to establish facts such as experience, expected salary, notice period and availability, text is usually enough and more candidates finish it. Where spoken communication is part of the job, pick video or voice, or test it in the second round.

Is AI interviewing allowed in Malaysia?

No Malaysian law prohibits it. Candidate answers and CVs are personal data, so the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 applies to whoever collects them, including its 2024 amendments on breach notification and data protection officers. This is not legal advice, and it is worth checking your own obligations before you start.

Will candidates actually complete an AI interview?

Completion depends mostly on what the format asks of them. Tell candidates up front that they are talking to an AI, keep the interview short, let them stop and come back, and give anyone who will not use it a route to a person. The arithmetic of why a first round breaks at volume is in how to screen two hundred applicants for one role.
